Abstract
This study aims to examine the historical, philosophical, and psychological dimensions of memory through a comparative method, focusing on Henri Bergson's theory of memory in relation to modern psychological approaches. From Ancient Greece to modernity, memory has been conceptualized at times as a spiritual faculty and at other times as a cognitive function. The first part of the thesis traces the historical development of the concept through the ideas of philosophers such as Plato, Aristotle, Augustine, and Descartes. Subsequently, the thesis analyzes how major psychological schools — behaviorist, cognitive, psychoanalytic, humanistic, and neuropsychological — approach memory. Henri Bergson's understanding of memory, shaped by the notions of 'duration,' 'pure memory,' and 'creative evolution,' is positioned within this theoretical framework, offering an original synthesis. In Bergson's view, memory is not merely a repository of the past but also a condition of existential becoming. Finally, the study explores the structural, functional, and metaphysical dimensions of memory, especially through Bergson's cone-shaped memory model, and discusses the intersections and divergences with psychological theories. This work ultimately aims to provide an interdisciplinary contribution by bringing philosophy and psychology together around the concept of memory. Keywords: Henri Bergson, Memory, Duration, Philosophy, Psychology
