Abstract
This research was conducted to examine the relationship between middle school students' critical thinking tendencies and their school motivation. Using a mixed-method approach, data were collected from 341 students selected via simple random sampling using 14 and 21-item scales and analyzed using SPSS 22.0. Additionally, open-ended data were analyzed using MAXQDA 20. The results indicated no significant relationship between critical thinking tendencies and goal orientation, performance, school engagement, and school motivation. However, significant differences were found in performance, school engagement, and school motivation based on gender. While no differences were observed by school type, notable differences emerged based on grade level, number of siblings, and parents' education levels. The analysis of open-ended questions highlighted the importance of critical thinking in interpreting events differently, fostering skepticism, and enhancing personal development. Participants expressed both positive and negative views on school motivation, citing issues like lack of concentration, social pressure, and behaviors that reduce motivation. The majority indicated a connection between critical thinking and motivation, while cultural differences were seen as barriers to its acceptance. It is believed that enjoying lessons increases continuity, and critical thinking aids in self-expression. Keywords: Critical Thinking, Middle School Students, Motivation, School Motivation, Thinking
