Abstract
Tale, one of the most important building blocks of the oral narrative tradition, is a symbolic narrative type that reflects the thoughts, beliefs and lifestyles of societies with the ordinary and extraordinary elements it contains. Tales were first spread through word-of-mouth and then written, and today, they still continue to be told via digital media by various storytellers. Tales are maintained in their natural environments as well as in new contexts and they present people with a common culture and cultural consciousness in daily life. They have an important place in oral tradition and contain the archetypes of the collective subconscious. The archetypes that Carl Gustav Jung mentions in his book The Four Archetypes are outside of the collective consciousness of humanity. The tale, which is the product of consciousness and unconsciousness, is reshaped in the context in which it is told as well as commonality. In this study, the tale of Keloğlan, which has an important place among Turkish type of tales, was compiled from the central Artuklu district of Mardin. Keloğlan is called and known as “Il akra’a” (bald person) in local Arabic. Keloğlan, who is the protagonist in the analyzed tale, is smart, canny, funny, brave etc. and has the features of Keloğlan. These archetypes reflect the character of a society as well as being universal. In this study, the Keloğlan tale compiled from Artuklu is examined in terms of the archetypical symbolism that Jung mentioned and Joseph Campbell expanded. Detected archetypes; Anima-animus, shadow, persona, stage, rebirth, hero, great individual-old wise trickster and father archetypes were examined under nine subtitles. The symbols in the tale were analyzed and presented in a table.
