Abstract
This article concerns the notion of hudûth dahrî by the 17th-cc. Muslim philosopher Mîr Dâmâd and the difference regarding this notion between him and Ibn Sina. This notion bears the importance of posing as a third path presented to the supporters of eternity and creation which came to being among Muslim philosophers and theologians. Dâmâd maintained that the universe was created but that this creation happened on a super-temporal level, i.e. not as a temporal event which the theologians claimed. Furthermore, he proposed that the thesis of super-temporal creation of the universe did not mean that the universe was eternal, which was claimed by Ibn Sina. Dâmâd supported his thesis by relying on Ibn Sina’s suggestions, but thought that Ibn Sina’s notion of ontological existence was insufficient for explaining the creation of the universe. He made a sharp departure from Ibn Sina’s philosophy by rejecting the possibility of the existence of any eternal beings other than God, and thus presented his own theory hudûth dahrî.
