Article Khorsabad/dūr-šarrukin Kazısı ve Asar-ı Atika\rMizamnamelerine Etkisi(Istanbul Univ, 2021) Genc, BulentWhen Paolo Emilio Botta was appointed to Mosul as the French consul in the last quarter of the 19th century, significant developments in Mesopotamian archeology occurred. During Botta's studies in the Mosul area, a resident of the village of Khorsabad mentioned reliefs and inscriptions on top of a hill. Botta dispatched a group of workmen to Khorsabad on March 20, 1843, after three months of arduous work in Kuyunjik. However, problems began to arise shortly after his work in Mosul. Particularly Mehmed Pasha in the province creates various obstacles. In this context, we searched the Ottoman Archives to learn more about Botta's excavation permits and documents, the obstacles created by the Pasha of Mosul, and the details, background, and correspondence of Botta's story in Khorsabad. We came across many documents, which included details as to the problems Botta experienced in Khorsabad, the conditions about the excavation permit and the construction of the excavation house, the plan of the excavation house mentioned by Botta, which was shown to be like a castle next to the village houses and sent to Istanbul, and the petitions of the villagers against Botta's research and the excavation house. In this article, we tried to understand how this period was understood and handled by re-reading Botta's excavation periods, permit documents, and the problems he encountered through the available documents. In particular, in the context of Khorsabad, we reviewed the excavation permission and articles given to Botta and examined its contribution to the Asar-i Atika Regulations.Article Citation - WoS: 7Citation - Scopus: 6Protective effects of dexmedetomidine on ischaemia-reperfusion injury in an experimental rat model of priapism(Andrologia, 2021) Unsal, Velid; Kölükçü, Engin; S. A total of 18 male rats were randomised into three groups. Group 1 was the control group. A priapism model was performed rats in Group 2 and then ischaemia-reperfusion injury was evaluated. Group 3 had similar procedures to the rats in Group 2. Rats in Group 3 additionally had 100 μg/kg dexmedetomidine administered intraperitoneally immediately after reperfusion. Blood and tissue samples were analysed. Biochemical analysis of blood samples revealed a decrease in the levels of the pro-inflammatory cytokines including interleukin-1 beta (IL-1 Beta), interleukin-6 (IL-6), and tumour necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-alpha) in Group 3 compared to Group 2 (p:.04, p:.009 and p:.009, respectively). Similarly, the highest malondialdehyde (MDA) level was in Group 2 (p:.002). The levels of antioxidant enzymes superoxide dismutase (SOD) and glutathione peroxidase (GSH-Px) activities were significantly higher in Group 3 than that of Group 2 (p:.037 and p:.045, respectively). Direct microscopic examinations revealed positive changes in desquamation, oedema, inflammation and vasocongestion scores in Group 3 compared to Group 2 (p:.007, p:.008, p:.007 and p:.006, respectively). Methodology/Design/Approach – Eleven key stakeholders representing tourism organisations in Portugal were interviewed to obtain qualitative data. A content analysis was then conducted to uncover themes and sub-themes. Findings – The results show two main themes, including sub-themes: Gender inequality (partial gender equality, lack of gender salary equality, lack of women in higher positions, and gender inequality in career advancement) and work-life balance (the difficulty of balancing work and personal/family life and the need for better conditions for women accompanying children). Originality of the research – his study highlights gender equality and work-life balance in the tourism and hospitality industry from the perspective of managers of the leading tourism organisations in Portugal. In our study, we investigated the effect of body mass index (BMI) on CIED-related complications. Methods: 1676 patients who had undergone CIED surgery (de novo implantation, system upgrade, generator change, pocket revision or lead replacement) at two heart centers in Turkey and met the study criteria were included in our study. For analysis of primary and secondary endpoints, patients were classified as non-obese (BMI < 25 kg/m2), overweight (25 ≤ BMI < 30 kg/m2), and obese (BMI ≥ 30 kg/m2). The primary endpoint was accepted as cumulative events, including the composite ofclinically significant hematoma (CSH), pericardial effusion or tamponade, pneumoth- orax, and infection related to the device system. Secondary outcomes included each component of cumulative events. Results: The rate of cumulative events, defined as primary outcome, was higher in the obese patient group, and we found a significant difference between the groups (3.0%, 4.3%, 8.9%, p = .001). CSH and pneumothorax rates were significantly higher in the obese patient group (0.3%, 0.9%, 1.9%, p = .04; 1.0%, 1.4%, 3.3%, p = .04, respectively). According to our multivariate model analysis; gender (OR:1.882, 95%CI:1.156–3.064, p = .01), hypertension (OR:4.768, 95%CI:2.470–9.204, p < .001), BMI (OR:1.069, 95%CI:1.012–1.129, p = .01) were independent predictors of cumulative events rates. Conclusions: Periprocedural complications associated with CIED (especially hematoma and pneumothorax) are more common in the group with high BMI.Article Citation - WoS: 2Citation - Scopus: 1Offense Narrative Roles of Turkish Offenders(International Journal of Offender Therapy and Comparative Criminology, 2021) Zeyrek-Rios, Emek Yüce; Canter, David V.; Youngs, DonnaThe study of offense narratives emphasizes the agency of the offender which brings psychology closer to law. As an effort to create a standardized and quantitative method to evaluate offender narratives, Youngs and Canter developed the Narrative Roles Questionnaire (NRQ) based on the content analyses of the crime narratives of offenders in UK prisons. The current study aims to investigate the applicability of offense narrative roles framework among Turkish offenders. The application of the offense narrative roles model to a non-Western country is the first step toward the acceptance of criminal narrative theory as a universal explanation of criminal behavior. A translation of the NRQ was administered to 468 Turkish male inmates who have committed a wide range of offenses from fraud to murder. The results of an MDS analysis yielded four roles, namely Professional, Revenger, Hero, and Victim, echoing the original formulation proposed by Youngs and Canter. The reliability coefficients of scales derived for these roles were all at desired levels. The results support the applicability of the NRQ framework in a non-English context.Article Citation - WoS: 17Citation - Scopus: 21The relationship of fast food consumption with sociodemographic factors, body mass index and dietary habits among university students(Emerald, 2022) Arslan, Nurgul; Aslan Ceylan, Jiyan; Hatipoğlu, AbdulkerimPurpose – University students are one of the vulnerable groups in terms of having nutritional problems due to their lifestyle and social environment. This study aims to determine the consumption of fast food among university students and evaluate factors that may impact it, such as sociodemographic factors, body mass index (BMI) or nutritional habits. Design/methodology/approach – A cross-sectional study was conducted among a random sample of 184 university students (47.8% men and 52.2% women) with a mean age of 21.1 6 2.0 years. The survey included students’ sociodemographic characteristics, anthropometric measurements, nutritional habits and fast-food consumption. Chi-square test, t-test and binary logistic regression analysis were used depending on the characteristics of the data. Findings – Results indicated that 39.7% of the students consumed fast food at least once in 15 days and preferred these foods for taste, workload and social activity. Consumption of fast food occurred at an earlier age in men (%13.6) and the portions were higher than portions of vegetables (p = 0.001). By using regression analysis, a statistically significant relationship was found between the frequency of fast-food consumption and age, gender, economic status, BMI, the amount of vegetables consumed daily and the habit of eating breakfast (p < 0.05). Research limitations/implications – It is planned to reach more students in the study. However, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, transportation to students became difficult or could not be reached. Originality/value – This study is one of the rare studies examining students’ orientation to fast food. The number of studies in this field in Turkey is limited.Article Citation - WoS: 39Citation - Scopus: 48Utilization of Morchella esculenta-mediated green synthesis golden nanoparticles in biomedicine applications(Taylor & Francis Online, 2021) Acay, HilalThis study aimed to synthesize gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) by hot water extract in room conditions using edible Morchella esculenta (ME) and investigate the bioactive properties of the synthesized Morchella esculenta-based gold nanoparticles (ME-AuNPs). The characterization of the biologically synthesized ME-AuNPs was made using the ultraviolet-visible spectrophotometry, X-ray crystallography, scanning electron microscopy, Fourier transforms infrared spectroscopy, and energy dispersive X-ray spectrum methods. The ME-AuNPs, with a particle size of 16.51 nm, were found to have strong bioactive properties. The antioxidant activity of the ME-AuNPs attempted by metal chelating activity, 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) radical scavenging capacity and the β-carotene linoleate model system. The activities at 10 mg/mL were 82, 85, and 77% for the chelation of ferrous ions, DPPH scavenging, and β-carotene linoleate tests, respectively. The ME-AuNPs also showed strong antimicrobial activity against various pathogen microorganisms and strong cytotoxic activity in the A549 and HepG2 cell lines. The inhibitor adsorption process on mild steel in 0.5M HCl system was studied at different temperatures (20 C–50 C). Furthermore, the surface morphology of MS was also investigated with SEM in the absence and the presence of inhibitor. The adsorption of 1-(2-Hydroxyethyl)-2-imidazolidinone on MS surface is an exothermic process and this process obeys the Langmuir adsorption isotherm. Samples of S. triostegus were obtained from Atatürk Dam Lake, Turkey, in two month periods during one year as from May. The major components were palmitic acid (16:0), stearic acid (18:0), oleic acid (18:1n-9), palmi toleic acid (16:1n-7), docosahexaenoic acid (DHA, 22:6n-3) and arachidonic acid (AA, 20:4n-6) in total lipid, 16:0, 18:0, 18:1n-9, eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA, 20:5n-3), DHA and AA in PL, 16:0, 16:1n7, 18:1n-9, linoleic acid (LA, 18:2n-6), AA, EPA, DHA and docosapentaenoic acid (22:5n-3) in TAG extracted from the liver of S. triostegus in all seasons. N-3/n-6 ratio was found 2.00-2.61 in females, 1.15-2.75 in males in total lipid. The highest lipid content was found in May (2.39%) in the females. In the males, the highest level was found in September (2.91%). In TAG fraction, the component with the lowest ratio in both sexes’ TAG is PUFA. In PL fraction, SFA, MUFA, and PUFA percentages were found at similar rates in both sexes in all months.Article Citation - WoS: 10Citation - Scopus: 11Carbamazepine-induced renal toxicity may be associated with oxidative stress and apoptosis in male rat(Taylor & Francis Online, 2021) Erdem Güzel, Elif; Kaya Tektemur, Nalan; Tektemur, Ahmet; Etem Önalan, EbruCarbamazepine (CBZ) is the antiepileptic drug used in epilepsy and some psychiatric disorders. Besides its widely used, many adverse effects have been reported including hematotoxicity, hepatotoxicity, endocrine disorders, and testicular damages due to oxidative stress. However, the role of CBZ on renal toxicity is not fully known. In this study, we attempted to explain the connected mechanisms by focusing on the metabolism of CBZ-induced renal toxicity in rats. Twenty male Wistar-Albino rats were randomized into 2 groups (n = 10); control (1 mL/day distilled water, orally) and CBZ (25 mg/kg/day CBZ, orally) groups. After 60 days, TAS (total oxidant status) and TOS (total oxidant status) levels, histopathological features, some genes involved in apoptosis, 8-hydroxy-2-deoxyguanosine (8-OHdG) activity, and apoptotic cells were assessed of kidney tissue. The oxidative stress index (OSI) was measured from TAS and TOS levels. TOS levels and OSI significantly increased, while TAS levels decreased in the CBZ group relative to the control group. Histopathological observations, Caspase-3 (Casp3), Poly [ADP-ribose] polymerase-1 (PARP-1), 8-OHdG immunoreactivities, and apoptotic cells markedly raised in the CBZ group compared with the control group. Also, mRNA expression of Cytochrome c (Cytc) and CASP3 significantly increased in the CBZ group compared to the control group. In conclusion, long-term use of CBZ may promote renal damage in rats by inducing oxidative stress and apoptosis.Article Citation - WoS: 12Citation - Scopus: 10The Nephroprotective Effect of Quercetin in Cyclophosphamide-Induced Renal Toxicity Might Be Associated With Mapk/Erk and Nf-Κb Signal Modulation Activity(Taylor & Francis Ltd, 2024) Kavak, Deniz Evrim; Dokumaci, Fatma Zehra; Kizildag, Sefa; Irtegun-Kandemir, Sevgi; Seker, UgurThe present study aimed to examine the protective effect of quercetin (QUE) on cyclophosphamide (CTX)-induced nephrotoxicity. For that purpose, 24 mice were divided into four groups (Control, QUE, CTX, and CTX + QUE). The CTX and CTX + QUE groups received 200 mg/kg of cyclophosphamide on the 1(st) and 7(th) days. The QUE and CTX + QUE groups were treated with 50 mg/kg of quercetin daily for 14 days. At the end of the experiment, the animals were sacrificed, and kidney samples were analyzed. The results indicated that CTX leads to severe morphological degenerations and disruption in renal function. Serum BUN, Creatinine, Uric acid, tissue Bax, Caspase 3, TNF-alpha and IL-1 beta expression levels were upregulated in the CTX group compared to Control and QUE groups (p < 0.05). Although MAPK/ERK phosphorylation level is not affected in CTX group, there was a significant increase in CTX + QUE group (p < 0.05), but the NF-kappa B was significantly suppressed in this group (p < 0.01). The RT-qPCR results showed that the cyt-c and the Bax/Bcl-2 ratio mRNA expression folds were upregulated in the CTX group (p < 0.01), which was downregulated in the CTX + QUE group. However, there was a significant difference in the CTX + QUE group compared to the Control and QUE groups (p < 0.01). The findings showed that administering quercetin along with cyclophosphamide alleviated renal injury by regulating apoptotic and inflammatory expression. Rats were divided into four groups as control, doxorubicin (DOX), DOX + ALA and ALA. A single dose of 15 mg/kg DOX was administered i.p to the DOX and DOX + ALA groups. 50 mg/kg ALA was given to the DOX + ALA and ALA groups by oral gavage every other day. After 28 days, rat testes and serum samples were collected and analysed. Administration of DOX alone caused a decrease in body and relative testicular weights, seminiferous tubule diameter and germinal epithelium thickness, Johnsen's score and serum testosterone levels. DOX treatment led to severe testicular damage such as tubular degeneration, and atrophic tubules. Also, the activities of superoxide dismutase and glutathione peroxidase were reduced, while the level of malondialdehyde was increased in the testis. The mRNA levels of apoptotic-related genes (CASP3, TP53, BAX, BCL2) and apoptotic index were increased, while mitofusin-2 decreased. DOX caused an increase in CASP3 and a decrease in mitofusin-2 immunoreactivities. Treatment with ALA markedly improved all of DOX-induced biochemical, histochemical and molecular alterations in rat testis. This study aimed to compare pelvic floor muscle strength (PFMS) and dysfunctions in women with and without pes planus. Materials and methods: Women with (pes planus group, n = 30) and without pes planus (control group, n = 30) were included. The presence of PFDs questioned. Pes planus with the Feiss Line Test, PFMS with the Modified Oxford Scale, and the severity of PFDs with the Pelvic Floor Distress Inventory-20 (PFDI-20), including three subscales (Pelvic Organ Distress Inventory-6 (POPDI-6) for pelvic organ prolapse, Colorectal-Anal Distress Inventory-8 (CRADI-8) for colorecto-anal symptoms, and Urinary Distress Inventory-6 (UDI-6) for urinary symptoms, were assessed. Results: It was seen that no difference was found between groups in terms of PFMS (p > 0.05). However, urinary incontinence and anal incontinence were higher in women with pes planus than in women without pes planus (p < 0.05). Only the PFDI-20, CRADI-8, and UDI-6 scores were higher in women with pes planus compared to controls (p < 0.05). There was no difference was found between groups in terms of POPDI-6 scores (p > 0.05). Conclusion: The PFMS did not change according to the presence of pes planus. However, the prevalence of PFDs and their severity were higher in women with pes planus in comparison to controls. Posture assessments of individuals with PFDs, especially examination of foot posture, and pelvic floor assessments of individuals with posture disorders should be considered.Article Citation - WoS: 2Citation - Scopus: 2Volatile Compounds, Bioactive Properties and Chlorophylls Contents in Dried Spearmint (Mentha Spicata L.) as Affected by Different Drying Methods(Galenos Publ House, 2023) Korkmaz, Aziz; Arslan, Erhan; Kosan, MeltemThis study presents a comparison of the quality characteristics of spearmint (Mentha spicata L.) dried by a photovoltaic thermal dryer (PVT), the shade dried spearmint (SDS), and an oven dried spearmint (ODS). The obtained samples were evaluated with respect to volatile compounds (VC), total phenolic content (TPC) and flavonoid content (TFC), antioxidant capacity (AC) and chlorophylls (Chl) contents. PDS had the highest amount of TPC, TFC and AC, while SDS and ODS did not differ significantly from each other in terms of these features. SDS exhibited the highest Chl a and Chl b contents, whereas ODS showed the lowest. The composition of VC in the dried spearmints was significantly affected by the drying methods used. The total amount of terpenoids, especially carvone, responsible for spearmint's characteristic aroma in SDS was higher than those of the others, while the concentrations of most VC were lowest in ODS. According to the results, the PVT can be recommended for drying spearmint.Article Citation - WoS: 1Investigation of building certification systems in terms of sustainable preservation: the case of Mardin city in Turkey(2023) Kutlu, İzzettin; Bekar, İremThe global threats that arise due to the changing needs as a result of the advancement of technology cause the rapid depletion of natural resources. This situation necessitates studies to protect resources and reduce energy consumption. Recent studies have particularly emphasized the concept of “sustainability”. Today, as a result of the emergence of sustainability in buildings, certification systems have been developed in which the features of buildings are revealed. In this study, 4 certificate systems frequently used in different countries were discussed. First of all, these systems were examined, and their current data were revealed. The study aims to reveal the sustainability of a historical building located in an important historical city in Turkey according to criteria of the determined certification system. For this aim, the Old Government House in Mardin was discussed as a study area. The historical features of the building and plan features were included in the study area. In the findings of the study, the features of the historical building were determined according to the criteria of certification systems. In the evaluation of the features revealed, suggestions were made especially for the use of energy and water. At this point, to use simple renewable energy sources and systems will support the efficient and recycling of water in the building. This situation will contribute to the sustainable use of the faculty to a great extent. Sixty-four adult male rats were divided into eight equal groups: control, P (100 mg/kg/day), Q (100 mg/kg/day), P + Q (100 mg/day for both), diabetes mellitus (DM) (single-dose 60 mg/kg streptozotocin), DM + P, DM + Q, and DM + P + Q. The rats were sacrificed, and blood and sciatic nerve tissues were collected. Blood glucose and malondialdehyde (MDA) levels increased, while IL-6 and total antioxidant status decreased in the DM group (p = 0.016 and p = 0.047, respectively). Ultrastructural findings showed degeneration of the axon and myelin sheath. The apoptotic index (AI %), TNF-alpha, and IL-1 beta immunopositivity increased significantly in the DM group (p < 0.001). Morphological structures approaching those of the controls were observed in the DM + P, DM + Q, and DM + P + Q groups. Morphometric measurements increased markedly in all treatment groups (p < 0.001), while blood glucose and MDA levels, AI (%), TNF-alpha, and IL-1 beta immunopositivity decreased. In conclusion, the combined effects of propolis and quercetin in diabetic neuropathy may provide optimal morphological protection with neuroprotective effects by reducing hyperglycemia, and these may represent a key alternative supplement in regenerative medicine.Article Citation - WoS: 14Citation - Scopus: 13Fatty Acid Composition of Root and Shoot Samples of Some Astragalus L. Astragalus species contained palmitic (C 16:0) (20.13%-53.8%), linoleic (C 18:2 omega-6) (13.25%-41.06%), oleic (C 18:1 omega-9) (5.78%-25.7%), linolenic (C 18:3 omega-3) (6.1%-22.89%), and stearic acid (C 18:0) (5.16%-13.1%) in the roots and linolenic (8.9%-51.42%), palmitic (20.16%-44.88%), linoleic (7.34%-27.57%), oleic (2.45%-17.91%), and stearic acid (4.28%-8.31%) in the shoots as major components. In this study the fatty acid composition of Astragalus species showed uniform fatty acid patterns. However, there are few studies in literature about how maternal tobacco smoke (ts) or alpha lipoic acid (ala) affect the hypothalamus-pituitary-gonadal axis at peripheral or central levels in rats. This study aimed to investigate effects of maternal tobacco smoke or alpha lipoic acid on puberty onset, estrous cycle and serum gonadotropin levels in female rats. Adult female spraque-dawley rats were used. All animals were randomly divided into 4 groups (control, ts, ts+ala and ala) and each group consisted of 7 rats. All ts rats were exposed to ts (20 gram\day, for one hour twice a day) and all ala rats received daily oral ala (20 mg/kg) during 8 week. Afterwards all rats were impregnated, ts or ala treatments continued during pregnancy. All treatments ended with birth and later newborn female rats were selected for each group (n=7). Puberty onset was monitored by examination of vaginal opening in female rat pups. Subsequently, estrous cycle was conducted daily for 15 days and determined by examination of the vaginal smear cytology. Also, serum fsh and lh levels were measured using elisa method at the end of the experiment. There was significantly advanced on puberty onset day for ts group (p<0.05). There was a significantly increase in pubertal weight in ala group compared to control group (p<0.001). The mean total number of estrous cycles and average duration of metestrus, diestrus, proestrus or estrus phases were not significantly different in all treatments groups compared to control group. There was no any significant change in serum fsh levels, but serum lh levels were significantly increased in all treatment groups compared to control group (p<0.05). Present study showed that maternal tobacco smoke or alpha lipoic acid may affect hypothalamus-pituitary-gonadal axis differently in rats.
