Education as a Way To Tackle Overtourism: the Application of the Principles of Responsible Management Education (prme)
    (Palgrave Macmillan, 2020) Çakar, K.
The aim of this chapter is to discuss whether the Principles of Responsible Management Education (PRME) can potentially be an integral part of strategies addressing the issue of overtourism. The chapter demonstrates that the PRME can be used as a supporting tool as its principles potentially constitute and underscore the significance of a responsible and sustainable world. As such, they can play a crucial role in drawing the attention of higher education institutions and industry practitioners towards achieving the SDGs, while dealing with the issue of overtourism through education. The chapter also shows that as the measures and targets of the PRME are also in alignment with the SDGs, they can be considered as a highly effective tool in helping overcome the problem of overtourism. © The Author(s) 2020.

Critical success factors for tourist destination governance in times of crisis: a case study of Antalya, Turkey
(ROUTLEDGE JOURNALS, TAYLOR & FRANCIS LTD, 2018) Cakar, Kadir
The aim of this paper is to identify the critical success factors for the development of crisis management and strategy for the governance of the tourist destination of Antalya, Turkey. Data was obtained from in situ interviews, participant observation, and documentation. Interviews were conducted with the main tourism stakeholders representing both public and private sectors in Antalya. Findings show that the critical success factors of responsiveness, shared roles, strategy formation, and collaboration are vital for effective crisis management. The study also highlighted the fact that in the area of shared roles and collaboration, encompassing the characteristics of coordination, communication, cooperation, and knowledge transfer, stakeholders are proving ineffectual, thereby obstructing the development of necessary strategies for crisis management and the recovery process. Further, ineffective governance, adopted by local stakeholders, has had a substantial negative impact on the process of developing future effective crisis management strategies.

(Routledge Journals, Taylor & Francis Ltd, 2020) Cakar, Kadir; Uzut, Ismail
The aim of the present study is to explore the role of tourism stakeholders in the sustainable degrowth of tourism, within the context of overtourism and destination governance. Data was gathered from document analysis and in-depth, face-to-face interviews with key tourism stakeholders in Istanbul, the most popular tourist destination in Turkey. A qualitative case study approach was adopted and content analysis was utilized as a data treatment technique. The results indicate that demarketing and applying "localhood" tourism activities are key drivers behind degrowth. Findings have also confirmed that degrowth is one solution in response to the concept of overtourism.
