Review Citation - WoS: 2Citation - Scopus: 2Anatolian Medicinal Plants as Potential Antiviral Agents: Bridging Traditional Knowledge and Modern Science in the Fight Against Covid-19 and Related Viral Infections(Tubitak Scientific & Technological Research Council Turkey, 2024) Tilkat, Engin; Jahan, Israt; Hoser, Ayse; Kaplan, Alevcan; Ozdemir, Oguzhan; Onay, AhmetThe severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) was the cause of the coronavirus 2019 (COVID-19), commonly known as the coronavirus pandemic. Since December 2020, COVID-19 vaccines have been extensively administered in numerous countries. In addition to new antiviral medications, the treatment regimen encompasses symptom management. Despite sustained research efforts, the outbreak remains uncontrolled, with affected patients still lacking proper treatment. This review is a valuable asset for researchers and practitioners aiming to delve into the yet unexplored potential of Anatolian flora in the fight against COVID-19 and other viral infections. Numerous medicinal plants in Anatolia, such as thyme, sage, cannabis, oregano, licorice root, and Origanum sp., contain bioactive compounds with proven antiviral properties that have been used in the region for centuries. The rich legacy of traditional Anatolian medicine (TAM), has significantly influenced modern medicine; thus, the profusion of medicinal plants native to Anatolia holds promise for antiviral drug development, making this review essential for researchers and practitioners.Article Citation - WoS: 2Citation - Scopus: 2Ascorbic Acid Exhibits More of a Protective Effect Than Estradiol Against Nephrotoxicity Induced by Malathion in Rats: a Histopathological and Molecular Docking Study(TUBITAK Scientific & Technological Research Council Turkey, 2025) Alhilal, Mohammad; Salem, Mahmoud E. L. S. A. Y. E. D. M. O. H. A. M. E. D.; Ali Albakoush, Ahmed; Alhilal, Suzan; Farag, Basant; Gomha, Sobhi M.; Albakoush, Ahmed; Elsayed Mohamed Salem, Mahmoud; M.gomha, SobhiBackground/aim: Despite the known harmful effects associated with malathion toxicity in various organs, it continues to be widely used for plant protection and insect control. This study is the first to compare the protective effects of estradiol and ascorbic acid against malathion-induced nephrotoxicity through histopathological assessment and molecular docking analyses. Materials and methods: This study was conducted using 20 female albino rats that were distributed into sham, malathion, malathion + estradiol, and malathion + ascorbic acid groups. Nephrotoxicity was induced by daily treatment with malathion and the effects of estradiol and ascorbic on nephrotoxicity were evaluated. After 4 weeks of treatment, the animals were sacrificed and the kidneys were examined following hematoxylin and eosin (H&E) staining. Histopathology results were supported by molecular docking studies of estradiol and ascorbic acid against a target protein (PDB ID: 2YMX), the peptide inhibitor Fab408 inhibiting acetylcholinesterase (AChE). The inhibition of AChE is the primary mechanism of the toxic effects of malathion. Results: Histopathological examination revealed a notable elevation (p < 0.001) in degeneration and necrosis within the tubular epithelium and interstitial nephritis in the malathion group compared to the sham group. Daily administration of estradiol and ascorbic acid resulted in a notable reduction (p = 0.0022) in the severity of these histopathological changes in the malathion + estradiol and malathion + ascorbic acid groups compared to the malathion group. Of these, the most significant decreases were observed in the malathion + ascorbic acid group. Docking studies of these compounds against the selected protein (PDB ID: 2YMX) revealed promising binding scores. Ascorbic acid exhibited the highest docking score (-6.44 kcal/mol), indicating a favorable binding interaction with this protein. Conclusion: Estradiol and ascorbic acid exert protective effects against malathion-induced nephrotoxicity, whereas ascorbic acid showed superior efficacy compared to estradiol. This result was further supported by molecular docking studies.Article Citation - WoS: 8Citation - Scopus: 6The association of allergic rhinitis severity with neutrophil-lymphocyte and platelet-lymphocyte ratio in children(Northern Clinics of İstanbul, 2022) Cansever, Murat; Sarı, NeslihanObjective: The aim of the study was to investigate the relationship between the severity of allergic rhinitis (AR) and neutrophil-lymphocyte ratio (NLR) and platelet-lymphocyte ratio (PLR) in pediatric patients. Methods: This study is a retrospective, cross-sectional, and observational study including 200 AR patients and 160 healthy controls. Of the patients, 39% were boys with a mean age of 10.5 years. The study included children with persistent and intermittent AR. Of the controls, 50.6% were boys with a mean age of 10.3 years. We compared NLR and PLR from blood test between study and control groups. They were also compared according to AR severity within the patient group. Results: The NLR was 1.64±1.29 in the study group whereas 1.18±0.31 in the control group. The PLR was 102.72±31.20 in the study group whereas 79.36±11.72 in the control group. When NLR and PLR were compared between groups, we found statistically significant differences in both NLR and PLR (p=0.003, p=0.001, respectively). We found a statistically significant difference when comparing both NLR and PLR in patients with intermittent and persistent AR. These rates increased with disease severity (p=0.000, p=0.000, respectively). Conclusion: Both NLR and PLR are useful markers for the diagnosis and severity of AR. Clinicians can use these markers to assess disease severity in pediatric patients at the beginning of the diagnostic process.Article Citation - WoS: 5Citation - Scopus: 6Bronchiectasis in Türkiye: Data From a Multicenter Registry (Turkish Adult Bronchiectasis Database)(Galenos Publ House, 2024) Edis, Ebru Cakir; Cilli, Aykut; Kizilirmak, Deniz; Coskun, Ayson Sakar; Guler, Nurcan; Cicek, Sedat; Sayiner, Abdullah; Gülmez, İnci; Çağlayan, Benan; Niksarlioglu, Elif Yelda Ozgun; Researchers, TebvebBackground: Bronchiectasis is a chronic lung disease characterized by permanent bronchial wall dilatation. Although it has been known as an orphan disease, it has recently gained attention because of registry -based studies and drug research. Aims: We aimed to use a multicenter database to analyze and compare data regarding the etiology, associated comorbidities, microbiological characteristics, and preventive strategies of bronchiectasis in T & uuml;rkiye to those of other countries. Study Design: A multicenter prospective cohort study. Methods: The multicenter, prospective cohort study was conducted between March 2019 and January 2022 using the Turkish Adult Bronchiectasis Database, in which 25 centers in T & uuml;rkiye participated. Patients aged > 18 years who presented with respiratory symptoms such as cough, sputum, and dyspnea and were diagnosed with non -cystic fibrosis bronchiectasis using computed tomography were included in the study. Demographic information, etiologies, comorbidities, pulmonary functions, and microbiological, radiological, and clinical data were collected from the patients. Results: Of the 1,035 study participants, 518 (50%) were females. The mean age of the patients was 56.1 +/- 16.1 years. The underlying etiology was detected in 565 (54.6%) patients. While postinfectious origin was the most common cause of bronchiectasis (39.5%), tuberculosis was identified in 11.3% of the patients. An additional comorbidity was detected in 688 (66.5%) patients. The most common comorbidity was cardiovascular disease, and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and bronchiectasis was identified in 19.5% of the patients. The most commonly detected microbiological agent was Pseudomonas aeruginosa (29.4%). Inhaled corticosteroids (ICS) were used in 70.1% of the patients, and the frequency of exacerbations in the last year was significantly higher in patients using ICS than in nonusers (p < 0.0001). Age [odds ratio (OR): 1.028; 95% confidence interval (CI): 1.005-1.051], cachexia (OR: 4.774; 95% CI: 2,054-11,097), high modified medical research council dyspnea scale score (OR: 1,952; 95% CI: 1,459-2,611), presence of chronic renal failure (OR: 4,172; 95% CI: 1,249-13,938) and use of inhaled steroids (OR: 2,587; 95% CI: 1,098-6,098) were significant risk factors for mortality. Mortality rates were higher in patients with COPD than in those with no COPD (21.7-9.1%, p = 0.016). Patients with bronchiectasis and COPD exhibited more frequent exacerbations, exacerbation -related hospitalizations, and hospitalization in the intensive care unit in the previous year than patients without COPD. Conclusion: This is the first multicenter study of bronchiectasis in T & uuml;rkiye. The study results will provide important data that can guide the development of health policies in T & uuml;rkiye on issues such as infection control, vaccination, and the unnecessary use of antibiotics and steroids.Article Can Serum Biomarker Values from Second-Trimester Aneuploidy Screening Predict the development of Retinopathy of Prematurity in Premature Infants?(Kare Publishing, 2024) Sabanci, Senol; Kucuk, Mehmet Fatih; Savas, Hasan Basri; Suren, Elcin; Erol, Muhammet Kazim; Yavuz, And; Sipahioglu, HaydarObjectives: This study aimed to evaluate serum biomarker values measured during second-trimester aneuploidy screening in terms of their predictive ability for the development of retinopathy of prematurity (ROP) in premature infants. Methods: This retrospective cohort study evaluated the data of 1985 idiopathic premature infants who underwent ROP screening from 2016 to 2022. The infants were divided into two groups according to the presence of ROP, and those with ROP were further evaluated in two subgroups based on the presence of proliferation. Comparisons were made concerning the serum multiple of the median values of unconjugated estriol (uE3), human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG), and alpha-fetoprotein (AFP) among aneuploidy screening biomarkers. Results: While 1628 premature infants were in the non-ROP group, 357 were in the ROP group. Of the infants with ROP, 72 were in the proliferative ROP group and 285 in the non-proliferative ROP group. There was no significant difference in the multiple of the median values of the evaluated serum biomarkers (uE3, hCG, and AFP) between the ROP and non-ROP groups or between the proliferative ROP, non-proliferative ROP, and non-ROP groups. Conclusion: The multiple of the median values of second-trimester aneuploidy screening serum biomarkers were not able to predict the development of ROP in premature infants. This result may have been caused by the fact that the blood tests were taken only once and in the same weeks.Article Citation - WoS: 1Citation - Scopus: 1Comparison of Evolut-R 34 mm Valve and Smaller Evolut-R Valves in Patients Undergoing Transcatheter Aortic Valve Implantation and Determination of Mild Paravalvular Leak Predictors(Kare Publ, 2024) Demir, Muhammed; Aktan, Adem; Güzel, Tuncay; Kılıç, Raif; Arslan, Bayram; Ertas, Faruk; Günlü, SerhatObjective: The main purpose of this study was to evaluate and compare the in-hospital, 1-month and 1-year post-procedure outcomes of patients treated with Evolut-R 34 mm and Evolut-R 23/26/29 mm devices. Additionally, the study aimed to identify factors that could predict the occurrence of ≥ mild paravalvular leaks (PVL). Methods: Between April 2015 and May 2022, 269 consecutive patients who underwent transcatheter aortic valve implantation (TAVI) with Evolut-R 34 mm (n = 66, 24.5%) and Evolut-R 23/26/29 mm (n = 203, 75.5%) devices in a single center were retrospectively analyzed. Results: Patients in the Evolut-R 34 mm group had a lower female sex ratio (16.7% vs. 66.5%, P < .001, respectively), ejection fraction (50.7 ± 10.1% vs. 54.5 ± 9.3%, P = .016, respectively), and mean aortic gradient (7.4 ± 3.3 vs. 9.2 ± 5.0, P = .026, respectively) compared to the Evolut-R 23/26/29 mm group. The groups did not exhibit any statistically significant dis- tinctions with regard to technical success, the need for a permanent pacemaker, occur- rences of stroke, major vascular complications, PVL, major adverse cardiovascular and cerebrovascular events, or mortality. Peak velocity was confirmed as a significant pre- dictor of ≥mild PVL in both patient groups in the receiver operating characteristic curve analysis. In logistic regression analysis; In patients with Evolut-R 34 mm valve, pre-TAVI aortic valve peak velocity (odds ratio (OR) = 23.202; P = .019) and calcium volume 800 Hounsfield Units (mm3) (OR = 1.017; P < .001) were independent predictors of ≥mild PVL. Conclusion: The Evolut-R 34 mm valve has shown comparable in-hospital results with smaller valve sizes. Pre-TAVI aortic valve peak velocity and calcium volume predicted ≥ mild PVL in Evolut-R 34 mm patients.Article Citation - WoS: 2Citation - Scopus: 1Effects of Ketamine on Penile Tissues in an Experimental Priapism Model in Rats(Turkish Assoc Trauma Emergency Surgery, 2024) Gevrek, Fikret; Fırat, Fatih; Unsal, Velid; Tapar, Hakan; Karaman, Tugba; Karaman, Serkan; Yalçın, Kenan; Kolukcu, Vildan; Balta, Mehtap GurlerBACKGROUND: This study aimed to evaluate the histopathological and biochemical effects of ketamine on penile tissues following ischemia-reperfusion injury induced by priapism. Additionally, a decrease in malondialdehyde (MDA) levels was observed in Group 3 compared to Group 2 (p<0.001). In contrast, activities of antioxidant enzymes, including superoxide dismutase (SOD) and glutathione peroxidase (GSH-PX), were signifi- cantly increased in Group 3 compared to Group 2 (p=0.031 and p=0.001, respectively). Furthermore, Group 3 demonstrated notable reductions in histopathological scores for follicular degeneration, vascular occlusion, bleeding, and inflammation compared to Group 2 (p<0.001, p<0.001, p<0.001, and p=0.001, respectively). CONCLUSION: Etomidate alleviates ischemia-reperfusion injury in a rat ovarian torsion-detorsion model by improving both histo- pathological and biochemical outcomes.Article Citation - WoS: 3Citation - Scopus: 5Evaluation inflammatory markers of hemogram parameters in primary ovarian insufficiency(Turkish journal of obstetrics and gynecology, 2020) Demir, Bülent; Sarıdaş Demir, Süreyya; Özkan Karacaer, Kübra; Paşa, Semir; Sılan, Fatma; Karacaer, Kübra Özkan; Demır, Sureyya SarıdasObjective: In most of primary ovarian insufficiency (POI) cases, etiologic factors have not been fully elucidated. Recent studies have revealed that inflammatory agents play an important role in the etiopathogenesis of POI. Therefore, the aim of this study was to investigate the role of inflammatory markers of hemogram parameters in POI. Materials and Methods: The study compared 47 healthy women and 47 women diagnosed as having POI retrospectively by scanning electronic and written recording systems. Complete blood counts, day-3 hormone profiles levels of all subjects were analyzed. The neutrophil-lymphocyte ratio (NLR), red cell distribution width (RDW), platelet ratio (RPR), platelet lymphocyte ratio (PLR), and mean platelet volume (MPV) mean platelet lymphocyte ratio (MPLR) were calculated from the complete blood count parameters. Results: White blood cell and MPV values, platelet, and lymphocyte counts were significantly higher in the POI patients (p<0.001, p=0.042, p=0.038, p=0.049, respectively), RPR was significantly lower than the control group (p=0.011), but there were no significant differences in hemoglobin, RDW, NLR, PLR, and MPLR (p=0.454, p=0.057, p=0.635, p=0.780, p=0.126, respectively). The neutrophil count of the study group was higher than in the control group (p=0.057). Bivariate correlation analyses showed no correlations between blood parameters and hormone levels. The area under the receiver operating characteristic curve for RPR in POI was 0.652, with a threshold value 0.053, sensitivity=63% and specificity=63. Conclusion: Inflammatory markers of hemogram detected higher in patients with POI then control subjects.Article Citation - WoS: 6Citation - Scopus: 7Evaluation of patients diagnosed with phenylketonuria and biotinidase deficiency by the newborn screening program: a ten-year retrospective study(The Turkish Journal of Pediatrics, 2022) Toktaş, İzzettin; Sarıbaş, Seyfettin; Canpolat, Semih; Erdem, Özgür; Özbek, Mehmet NuriBackground. Phenylketonuria (PKU) and biotinidase deficiency (BD) are autosomal recessive diseases. If they are not identified and treated early, severe intellectual disability and developmental delay occur. This study was conducted to calculate the ten-year incidence of PKU and BD in the Diyarbakır province of Turkey. Methods. This cross-sectional study included patients born between 2011-2020 and diagnosed with PKU and BD. Patients with a clear diagnosis had their records evaluated retrospectively. Results. Between 2011 and 2020, blood was taken from 417,525 newborns’ heels in Diyarbakir province. As a result of further diagnostic testing, 53 PKU (Incidence: 1:7878) and 177 BD (Incidence: 1:2359) were detected. Of the patients with BD, 56% had profound BD and 44% had partial BD. The records of a total of 269 patients (PKU: 25; BD: 123; Hyperphenylalaninemia: 121) were examined. Parents of 65% (n=15) of the patients diagnosed with PKU and 46.6% (n=55) of the patients diagnosed with BD were consanguineous. Conclusions. The incidence of both PKU and BD was found to be high in our region. The high number of consanguineous marriages was regarded as the most important explanation for the high frequency of these illnesses.Article Citation - WoS: 18Citation - Scopus: 17Evaluation of the Antioxidant Potency of Seseli L. Species (Apiaceae)(Turkish Journal of Pharmaceutical Sciences, 2020) Önder, Alev; Çınar, Ahsen Sevde; Yılmaz Sarıaltın, Sezen; İzgi, Mehmet Necat; Çoban, Tülay; Sarıaltın, Sezen YılmazObjectives: In the present study, the antioxidant potency of ethyl acetate (AcOEt) and methanol (MeOH) extracts from the aerial parts of Seseli L. species was investigated for the first time. Materials and Methods: Seseli species L. such as Seseli andronakii Woronow ex Schischk., S. campestre Besser, S. corymbosum Boiss. & Heldr., S. gummiferum subsp. gummiferum Pall. ex Sm., S. hartvigii Parolly & Nordt, S. libanotis (L.) W.Koch, S. petraeum M.Bieb., S. peucedanoides (M.Bieb.) Koso-Pol., S. resinosum Freyn & Sint., and S. tortuosum L. growing in Turkey were collected and evaluated for their antioxidant capacity by using 1.1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) radical scavenging and lipid peroxidation (LPO) inhibition methods. Results: The highest activities as a scavenger of DPPH radicals were found in the AcOEt extracts of S. peucedanoides (M.Bieb.) Koso-Pol (IC50=0.49 mg/mL), and S. libanotis (IC50=0.75 mg/mL); α-tocopherol was used as a positive control. On the other hand, in the LPO assay, the highest activities were determined in AcOEt and MeOH extracts (at 5 mg/mL) of S. tortuosum and S. libanotis (84-94%). Conclusion: This report gives important information about the antioxidant capacity of Seseli L. species. This research on antioxidant capacity proves that the use of some species used in Eastern Anatolia (in salads) is correct. With this screening study performed in Seseli L. species growing in Turkey, in the future, it is planned to isolate antioxidant compounds from the most active strains of Seseli L.Article Citation - WoS: 2Citation - Scopus: 1Evaluation of the Results of the Patients Who Underwent Plasmapheresis in the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit(Tubitak Scientific & Technological Research Council Turkey, 2024) Talay, Mehmet Nur; Orhan, Ozhan; Kangin, Murat; Turanli, Ese Eda; Ozbek, Mehmet Nuri; Karadağlı, Eşe EdaBackground/aim: Therapeutic plasma exchange (TPE) is an extracorporeal treatment method that removes large molecular weight substances from plasma. In our study, we aimed to retrospectively examine the indications and procedural methods of the patients who had undergone TPE, and the complications that occurred during the procedure. Materials and methods: Forty-one patients who were monitored in thePICU of Gazi Ya & scedil;argil Training and Research Hospital and had indications for TPE between 2017 and 2021 were included in the study. Laboratory parameters were checked before and after the TPE procedure. In addition to these, patients' diagnosis, weight, type of procedure and type of device, where the procedure was performed, duration of the procedure, amount of blood and plasma processed, complications, number of procedures, and death during the procedure or independent of the procedure were evaluated. Results: The median age was 93.0 (14.0-167.0) months. Hemolytic uremic syndrome (HUS) was the most common TPE indication with nine patients. The most common complication related to TPE was fever (11 patients), while no complication was observed in 18 patients. When laboratory results were evaluated according to American Society for Apheresis (ASFA) categories, a significant improvement was observed in the values of platelet, AST, ALT, LDH, urea, and creatinine in ASFA1 after TPE. No significant improvement was observed in ASFA2 (p > 0.05). In ASFA3, a significant improvement was observed in INR, AST, ALT, LDH, total bilirubin, creatinine, pH, and lactate values after TPE (p < 0.05). Five patients died from ASFA1, one from ASFA2, and three patients from ASFA3. Conclusion: Since significant adjustments are observed in clinical and laboratory values in sepsis-MOF, which is in the ASFA3 category, we believe that it should be evaluated in the ASFA2 or ASFA1 category in the early treatment of these diseases. In addition, we think that MIS -C cases, which have not been in any category according to ASFA, should be included in the ASFA2 or ASFA3 category, considering our TPE results.Article Citation - WoS: 1Citation - Scopus: 1Impact of Tumor Resection Volume on Visual Outcomes and the Need for Secondary Surgery Following Transsphenoidal Surgery in Suprasellar Extended Non-Functionial Pituitary Adenomas(Turkish Neurosurgical Society, 2024) Batur, Abdussamet; Bozkurt, Mustafa Alper; Gezer, Burak; Karabagli, Hakan; Koktekır, Ender; Sahinoglu, Mert; Gündoğdu, Derya Karaoğlu; Karaoglu Gundogdu, DeryaAIM: To investigate the surgical outcomes in patients with nonfunctional pituitary adenomas (NFPAs) exhibiting visual field defects (VFDs) in order to ascertain the impact of the volume of adenoma excised during surgery on recurrence rates and improvements in VFDs. MATERIAL and METHODS: From a cohort of 150 individuals diagnosed with NFPAs and exhibiting suprasellar extensions accompanied by VFDs, we selected 114 patients who fulfilled the inclusion criteria for further analysis after a comprehensive retrospective review. All selected patients underwent pituitary magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) examinations, and volumetric measurements were conducted on T1 contrast sequences using the Syngo.via software. Measurements were derived from MRI scans taken 24 h preoperatively, 24 h postoperatively, at 3 months, and at the end of the first year postsurgery. Volumetric values were compared between patients who underwent subsequent surgeries due to recurrence and those who did not. Similarly, the variables were evaluated in patients experiencing an improvement in VFD, those whose VFD remained stable, and those experiencing a deterioration in VFD. RESULTS: The recurrence rate was 19.3%. Among patients who underwent a second surgery due to recurrence, the presurgical adenoma volume, the adenoma volume removed based on the 24-h postoperative MRI, and the volumes recorded in the 3-month and 1-year postoperative imaging were significantly greater than those in patients who did not require a second surgery. Remarkable improvements were identified in 84.2% of patients with VFD complaints and 62.5% of those with visual acuity complaints. CONCLUSION: Adenoma volume measurements exerted a significant impact on recovery from VFDs and the need for a second surgery. Although the choice of surgical methodology does not definitively affect outcomes, an in-depth evaluation of variations in adenoma volume can provide valuable prognostic insights.Article The Involvement of the Serotonergic System in Ketamine and Fluoxetine Combination-Induced Cognitive Impairments in Mice(Ataturk Univ, 2024) Uyar, Emre; Erdinc, Meral; Kelle, Lker; Erdinc, Levent; Seker, Ugur; Nergiz, Yusuf; Kelle, İlkerBackground: Gluta mater gic N-methyl-D-aspartate (NMDA) receptors play vital roles in memory formation. Changes in the activity of these receptors influence memory processes. Ketamine is a noncompetitive NMDA receptor antagonist drug with promising mood-altering and pain-reducing effects ff ects in low doses. These effects ff ects are believed to be related to altered serotonergic transmission. Methods: The present study investigated the involvement of the serotonergic system in low-dose ketamine administrations' effects ff ects on memory acquisition, consolidation, and retrieval processes. Sixty-four male BALB/c mice were used in this experiment and separated into 8t groups. Mice were treated subchronically with a selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor, fluoxetine, and a serotonin depletion agent, p-chlorophenylalanine (pCPA). A serotonin antagonist, methiothepin, and ketamine were acutely administered 60 minutes before or after the behavioral tests. A passive avoidance (PA) test measured emotional memory acquisition, consolidation, and retrieval processes. Hippocampi malondialdehyde (MDA) levels were analyzed, and histopathological examinations were performed. Results: Ketamine alone did not significantly affect ff ect memory encoding processes in the PA test, while the ketamine-fluoxetine combination disrupted memory consolidation. Fluoxetine negatively affected ff ected the memory acquisition process, which was normalized during the consolidation and retrieval trials. Drug applications did not significantly alter hippocampal MDA levels. In all ketamine-applied groups, histopathologic alterations were evident. Conclusion: Low-dose ketamine administration induces neurodegeneration, and it also impairs memory functions when combined with fluoxetine, indicating increased serotonergic transmission may be involved in the memory-impairing and neurotoxic effects ff ects of ketamine.Article Citation - WoS: 1Citation - Scopus: 1Is There Any Effect of Lidocaine on Ischemia/Reperfusion Injury in Testicular Torsion? An Experimental Study(Turkish Assoc Trauma Emergency Surgery, 2024) Gevrek, Fikret; Fırat, Fatih; Unsal, Velıd; Kılınç, Fatih; Tapar, Hakan; Karaman, Serkan; Yalçın, Kenan; Kolukcu, Vildan; Karaman, Tugba; Balta, Mehtap GurlerBACKGROUND: This experimental study aimed to evaluate the potential protective effects of lidocaine on ischemia-reperfusion injury resulting from testicular torsion/detorsion in rats. METHODS: A total of 18 male rats were randomized into three groups. Group 1 served as the control group. Group 2 was designed to evaluate testicular ischemia-reperfusion injury using a torsion/detorsion model. In Group 3, the treatment group, a similar ischemia- reperfusion model was used as in Group 2. In our study, we aimed to determine whether the IMRS could predict mortality in patients admitted to the hospital with a diagnosis of acute pulmonary edema. Methods: A total of 371 patients who were admitted with a diagnosis of pulmonary edema, were included in our study. The IMRS of the patients was determined using a calculation tool, and the patients were divided into three groups based on the determined value: low, moderate, and high IMRS. Results: The patients included in our study comprised 208 women and 163 men, with an average age of 68.7 years. There was a statistically significant difference between the patient groups concerning both 1-month and 1-year mortality rates. Additionally, there was a significant difference in IMRS between patients who developed in-hospital, 1-month, and 1-year mortality and those who survived. In the Receiver Operating Characteristic (ROC) analysis, a cutoff value of 15.5 for the IMRS predicted both 1-year and 1-month mortality. In the Kaplan-Meier analysis, the highest mortality risk was observed in the high IMRS group and the lowest mortality risk in the low IMRS group. Conclusion: Our research results show that the IMRS strongly predicts both short-term and long-term mortality in patients hospitalized with a diagnosis of acute pulmonary edema.Article The Potential Renoprotective Effect of Sugammadex in Renal Ischemia-Reperfusion Injury(Galenos Publishing House, 2025) Gevrek, Fikret; Fırat, Fatih; Unsal, Velid; Kolukcu, Vildan; Sahin, Ahmet Tugrul; Balta, Mehtap; Yancı, Asiye; Genc, Ali; Bala, Mehtap Gurler; Gurpinar, Ahmer BurakObjective: We aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of sugammadex on renal tissue for against ischemia-reperfusion injury. Methods: Twenty-one Wistar albino strain female rats were divided into three groups. The first group functioned as the control cohort for comparison. In Groups 2 and 3, a renal ischemia-reperfusion model was established. Moreover, following the cessation of ischemia, the rats in Group 3 were intravenously administered sugammadex at a dose of 4 mg kg-1. Blood and tissue samples were subsequently collected for analysis. Results: Biochemical analyses revealed a notable increase in the enzymatic activities of glutathione peroxidase and superoxide dismutase in Group 3 relative to Group 2 (P < 0.001 and P=0.015, respectively). Additionally, the concentration of malondialdehyde was found to be significantly reduced in Group 3 relative to Group 2 (P=0.004). Group 3 exhibited a substantial decrease in tumor necrosis factor-alpha, interleukin 6, and interleukin 1 beta levels when compared to Group 2 (P=0.021, P=0.006, and P=0.016 respectively). Group 2 exhibited the highest concentrations of neutrophil gelatinase-associated lipocalin and kidney injury molecule-1 (P < 0.001 and P=0.015, respectively). Similarly, the histopathologic tissue damage was the most prominent in Group 2 (P < 0.001). Conclusion: Sugammadex plays a protective role against ischaemia-reperfusion injury in renal tissue.Article Citation - WoS: 8Citation - Scopus: 9Prevalence of obesity in elementary schools in mardin, South-Eastern of Turkey: A preliminary study(2012) Battaloğlu İnanç, Betül; Şahin Say, Deniz; Oğuzöncül, Ayşe Ferdane; Bindak, Recep; Mungan, FerideAmaç: Bu araştırmada, Mardin ilindeki ilköğretim çağı çocukları arasında obezite sıklığı, obezite ile aile ve çevre faktörleri arasındaki ilişki değerlendirildi. Article Citation - Scopus: 1Radiologic Severity Index Can Be Used To Predict Mortality Risk in Patients With Covid-19(Turkish Assoc Tuberculosis & Thorax, 2024) Sahutoglu, Elif; Kabak, Mehmet; Cil, Baris; Atay, Kadri; Peker, Ahmet; Guler, Suekran; Sahutoglu, Tuncay; Kara, Ekrem; Eldes, Tugba; Kara, Bilge Yılmaz; Tahtabaşı, MehmetIntroduction: Pneumonia is a common symptom of coronavirus disease-2019 (COVID-19), and this study aimed to determine how analyzing initial thoracic computerized-tomography (CT) scans using semi-quantitative methods could be used to predict the outcomes for hospitalized patients. Materials and Methods: This study looked at previously collected data from adult patients who were hospitalized with a positive test for severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus-2 and had CT scans of their thorax at the time of presentation. The CT scans were evaluated for the extent of lung involvement using a semi-quantitative scoring system ranging from 0 to 72. The researchers then analyzed whether CT score could be used to predict outcomes. Results: The study included 124 patients, 55 being females, with a mean age of 46.13 years and an average duration of hospitalization of 11.69 days. Twelve patients (9.6%) died within an average of 17.2 days. The non-surviving patients were significantly older, had more underlying health conditions, and higher CT scores than the surviving patients. After taking age and comorbidities into account, each increase in CT score was associated with a 1.048 increase in the risk of mortality. CT score had a good ability to predict mortality, with an area under the curve of 0.857 and a sensitivity of 75% and specificity of 85.7% at a cut-off point of 25.5. Conclusion: Radiologic severity index, which is calculated using a semi-quantitative CT scoring system, can be used to predict the mortality of COVID-19 patients at the time of their initial hospitalization.
